So I just changed ISPs from Time Warner to Verizon and all I can say is “wow this router is a dog.” It’s probably the worst piece of junk I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen routers come from the Soviet Union with better software on them. The interface is a cludge, you’re constantly forced to click “yes I’m really sure I want to do xyz” constantly, and the clicky bits aren’t actually attached to anything!

If you’re like me and your banging your head against a wall trying to get port forwarding working… keep banging. I’ve managed to get port 22 to forward to a linux box but that’s about it.

Enable Emoji icons on the iPhone

So far this has started to work on the latest (2.2) firmware for the iPhone.

You need to edit the file /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist on the device ->

I found it best to sftp in to the phone, make a backup, and edit the file using Apple’s Property List Editor. Copy the file back to /User/Library/Preferences/ . On the iPhone go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese and enable Emoji. That’s it.

Adobe’s Response to Microsoft

With Microsoft’s attempt to incorporate pdf’s, Microsoft’s Picture It, and now Microsoft’s Silverlight, it’s no secret that Microsoft has Adobe square in it’s sights. Silverlight presents a particular challenge, it does HD, is vector based, and works on both the PC and Mac. What’s Adobe to do, how about open sourcing Flex; Adobe’s SDK? Sounds like a good move to me, open-source has a bit of cache right now, plus Microsoft seeks to support the Mac and PC but where’s Linux support? Totally opening up a platform pretty much trumps Microsoft’s Silverlight announcements.

Looks like Zune hacks are abounding. In an effort to make a potentially cool product cooler a user on the Zuneboards has eliminated the “Guest Sync” function. You can now sync your Zune with any computer you please.

International courier UPS receives an average of more than one San Francisco parking ticket every hour, giving the company the unenviable distinction of being the city’s No. 1 parking violator.

Last year, United Parcel Service paid $673,334 in fines for 11,788 tickets — an average of one ticket every 45 minutes throughout the year.

Game Console Power Consumption

While I don’t think this is going to help someone make a decision, it’s not bad to know either. The power consumption of the latest generation of gaming consoles gets tested. Power consumption during game play, DVD playback, standby, and idle were all tested.
