Boy it’s been a long time hasn’t it? Well, whatever…
I’ve got Mythtv running on an Athlong 3400 64-bit processor. MythTv by far is one of the best projects I’ve ever spent my time attempting to build and well worth every penny I’ve paid in hardware. It’s just fantastic being able to record and stream TV, watch it on my computer or even use it as a DVD-jukebox. So don’t get me wrong when I say, it’s screaming fast and really the fastest computer I’ve ever owned, but I’m beginning to regret paying extra for the 64-bit processor. Mythtv is run on Gentoo, a Linux distribution, compiled specifically with the 64-bit processor in mind and what do I get? Nothing except hassles as far as I can tell. No speed improvements, I don’t even have 4-Gigs of RAM in the box and Microsoft’s codecs only run under 32-bit chrooted programs. This is more a stream of concious rant, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about lately.
