More money for boots

When I served in the United States Army I spared no expense in making myself more comfortable. Extra padding for the rucksack cost around $50.00 total, resoled boots cost around $60, velcro and fastex buckles cost a few buck here and there. By now I’m sure your asking yourself what the point of all this is. Let me re-assure you there is a point. I spend a few hours a day alone, sometimes in my car, sometimes just walking around, sometimes staring at the T.V. In those periods of isolation, so like the time I spent in the Army, I begin to think back and think about today’s common occurence. It’s gotten me to thinking and I’m hoping you will too. I’ve begun to ask myself this question more and more, “can the infantry man’s problems all be solved by money alone?” I mean think about it, remember the ruckus over improperly armoured vehicles? Problem solved by money. Remember the lack of body armour, some guys were still using flack jackets, problem solved with money. Can the cost of our cheapness be a soldiers life?
